there’s a word for this and you can’t repeat it in “polite” company.

today i received the long awaited shipment of two games that i ordered as a "test" through borderlinx.com. the notion is that you use them as a third party to ship your items. the concept is that this brings down shipping costs and/or grants me access to products otherwise unavailable to me. their service is "free". the games i actually ordered at amazon through borderlinx's site, (which is another story) but they came through third party sites, probably just as they do if they'd been shipped from amazon directly. one of the games cost $24.99 and the other $6.48. amazon charged me whatever the combined cost was plus shipping to my newly minted us address, and that's when the trouble began. assuming i was a bonfide US customer the shipping to wherever i might live in the US of A, was fairly nominal, especially since they were small and light items.

borderlinx got their hands on them and assesed the shipping cost at $35 per item. $20 of those dollars are the "administration" fees which i've thus determined is how they must make their money while offering a "free service".

after a jolly fight with them–a flurry of emails between us–which i think ultimately that i lost, we finally compromised on $55 US to ship both the items. I opened the two boxes to find that both games were swimming in their respective boxes and one of them so much so they had to pack it full of paper, thereby creating a large volumic weight and this is the weight upon which this outfit bases their exorbitant shipping costs. together the both of them barely tip at a kilo, but because of the big ass boxes they were packed in they weighed in "volumic" terms what apparently is comes out to somewhere in the neighbourhood of 5ish kilos.

suffice it to say i will not be using this service again, because it is bogus, and i don't care what all the glowing testimonials say. (we all know that some staffer writes those anyway.) this was the test that i was basing my potential relationship going forward with this company and in my eyes they failed abysmally.

caveat emptor indeed. my new motto that i will buy canadian or a close enough canadian facsimile wherever possible. then i will decide how badly i want said items and opt whether or not to pay the shipping costs if i can get it to me. it must be said that some canadian companies thoroughly soak on shipping rates, so in some ways it is all relative. a lot of companies operate under the notion that they simply would like to get their product into your hands is more important than making a killing by skewering with sky-high shipping costs.
